In August 2020 I spent a couple of weeks in the small seaside town of Montalto Di Castro, located in the province of Viterbo (northern Lazio), just a couple kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea. The picturesque historic center is a perfect example of a beautifully preserved medieval town, enclosed by large imposing city walls and featuring the impressive Castello Guglielmi built in the 15th century.

The historic centre is actually very small, with only about 8,000 inhabitants. Most summer visitors spend their time on the many sandy beaches in the region, or in the more modern areas away from the historic centre. When I spent time walking around the city centre I found the atmosphere to be very peaceful. I decided I would try to capture this soundscape, so I came back to the Piazza Giacomo Matteotti which is home to the town hall. I sat and recorded the following soundscape shortly before the bell tower rang out.
