The last in the series of market soundscapes comes from my 2010 trip to Israel. I was based in Tel Aviv, so decided to visit Jaffa one afternoon as it’s only about one kilometer away. I had been told that you could find the best humous at a small restaurant in Jaffa, so the principle mission was to find where this was. And during my hunt, I came across a small local flea market.
Not only was the market a real bric-a-brac (the diversity of things for sale was quite impressive), but I found the soundscape to be equally messy. There are a lot of different sounds coming from the objects on sale, as people picked them up to have a look, or simply scoured through all that was displayed. During the recording, a distant call to prayer can also be heard from one of the local mosques.
