The next few posts will be focusing on underground transport systems. I am fascinated by the different soundscapes that can be experienced around the world and whenever I’m in a big city, I always try to record the ambiance in the local subway. I find that in subway stations, the geographical differences are often quite subtle – sonic logos before a P.A. announcement, the sounds of the trains arriving and departing, local accents. But each place I have visited seems to have it’s own, unique soundscape. The first recording in this mini-series comes from Beijing in China.
The subway system in Beijing is very modern, particularly after heavy re-investment before the 2008 Olympic Games. I can’t remember exactly which station I recorded this in, but it was taken in September 2009.
